No matter how many times a day the janitorial team made the rounds, the men\u2019s urinals were always a mess.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b223\" class=\"iu jh dp bj ix b fx iy ji fz iz jj ja jb gk jc jd gl je jf gm jg ex\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">As many a mother, partner, and bathroom floor can attest, men often lack \u201curinary precision\u201d. In public toilets, the mess caused by hundreds of misses can be unsanitary and expensive to clean. The flies&nbsp;<a class=\"cg hi jr js jt ju\" href=\"https:\/\/.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2017\/10\/09\/whats-a-urinal-fly-and-what-does-it-have-to-with-winning-a-nobel-prize\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">reduced spillage<\/a>&nbsp;by 80% and&nbsp;<a class=\"cg hi jr js jt ju\" href=\"https:\/\/.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2017\/10\/09\/whats-a-urinal-fly-and-what-does-it-have-to-with-winning-a-nobel-prize\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">total cleaning costs<\/a>&nbsp;by 8%. As Klaus Reichardt, a member of the team who invented the solution put it:<\/p>\n<p id=\"0eee\" class=\"iu jh dp iw ix b fx iy ji fz iz jj ja jb gk jc jd gl je jf gm jg ex\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>\u201cGuys are simple-minded and love to play with their urine stream, so you put something in the toilet bowl and they\u2019ll aim at that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"f3fe\" class=\"iu jh dp iw ix b fx iy ji fz iz jj ja jb gk jc jd gl je jf gm jg ex\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>It could be anything. I\u2019ve seen a golf flag, a bee, a little tree. It just happens that at Schiphol it\u2019s a fly.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"5958\" class=\"iu jh dp bj ix b fx iy ji fz iz jj ja jb gk jc jd gl je jf gm jg ex\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But why did such a simple solution work so well? It\u2019s down to a behavioral science principle known as&nbsp;<strong class=\"ix jv\">salience bias<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7652\" class=\"jw jx dp bj bi di fg jy fi jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What is Salience Bias?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"acf7\" class=\"iu jh dp bj ix b fx kh ji fz ki jj ja kj gk jc kk gl je kl gm jg ex\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><a class=\"cg hi jr js jt ju\" href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/1977-20305-001\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong class=\"ix jv\">Salience<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;describes how prominent or emotionally striking something is. If an element seems to jump out from its environment, it\u2019s salient. If it blends into the background and takes a while to find, it\u2019s not.&nbsp;<a class=\"cg hi jr js jt ju\" href=\"https:\/\/.behavioraleconomics.com\/three-behavioral-insights-into-the-ageing-mind\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong class=\"ix jv\">Salience Bias<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;states that the brain prefers to pay attention to salient elements of an experience.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8950\" class=\"kw ko bn bj ff b kx kr ks kt ku kv jg\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em class=\"ky\">Salience describes the prominence or emotional resonance of an element.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"c71f\" class=\"jw jx dp bj bi di fg jy fi jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What makes something salient?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"89b8\" class=\"iu jh dp bj ix b fx kh ji fz ki jj ja kj gk jc kk gl je kl gm jg ex\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Salience works by creating what\u2019s called&nbsp;<a class=\"cg hi jr js jt ju\" href=\"https:\/\/.pace.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/files\/files\/honors-college\/best-of\/gianmarco-armenia.pdf\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong class=\"ix jv\">cognitive ease<\/strong><\/a>. This concept means making it simple for people to process information. But to do that, we need to know what elements make an experience salient. For instance:<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"cd86\" class=\"kz jx dp bj bi di la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li lj lk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ax\">1. Luminance<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p id=\"de3e\" class=\"iu jh dp bj ix b fx kh ji fz ki jj ja kj gk jc kk gl je kl gm jg ex\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The intensity of light emitted from an object. For example, fried chicken is more salient than grilled chicken because its crunchy texture draws attention. For example, black text on a yellow background is a combination often used for road signs. Yellow contrasts with the surrounding environment, and black contrasts with the yellow background. More than&nbsp;<a class=\"cg hi jr js jt ju\" href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1059434\/netflix-finally-explains-how-its-because-you-watched-recommendation-tool-works\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">80% of Netflix shows<\/a>&nbsp;customers watched in the last two years have been as a direct result of Netflix\u2019s recommendation engine.
