This is a big step closer to AGI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sam Altman<\/a> recently tweeted this picture of a strawberry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pretty much everyone (including me) believes this is a cryptic tweet about the upcoming release of OpenAI\u2019s \u201cStrawberry<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Strawberry?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Strawberry is a code name for OpenAI\u2019s secret model that is capable of advanced reasoning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>Note \u2014 Strawberry was formally called Q* (Q \u2014 Star)<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Why is \u201cStrawberry\u201d a big deal?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

LLMs (large language models) have been very impressive at many tasks, but they have also failed badly in other ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wrote about the most shocking mistake ChatGPT makes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basically, ChatGPT fails when you ask it the simple question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\nHow many r\u2019s are in the word \u201cstrawberry\u201d?<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

It is shocking that it gets this simple question wrong, but it really does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OpenAI\u2019s \u201cStrawberry\u201d will be able to get a question like this correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is because it will be capable of advanced reasoning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>Some people say it will be \u201cgood at math\u201d.<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

One problem with LLMs currently is they just spit out the first answer that comes to mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, I just asked ChatGPT to write a paragraph with exactly 42 words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It gave me a paragraph with only 40 words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>The problem is that in order to do this task correctly, you need to perform some sort of reasoning.<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

If you ask a human to do this, they will start writing a couple of sentences and then see how many words they have so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s say they have 32 words after 2 sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They will then play around with a new sentence until they get one with exactly 10 words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is impossible to just start writing and hope that you land on exactly 42 words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is because you can\u2019t just stop a sentence wherever you want to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You need to have some type of planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\u201cStrawberry\u201d should be able to do this type of task.<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Instead of just writing out the answer immediately, it might do the type of reasoning \u201cin the background\u201d that I\u2019m describing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once it gets a paragraph with 42 words, it will count the words in the background to double-check, and then finally post the answer for us to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will take more time and energy to do, but this is where this \u201cadvanced reasoning\u201d stuff is heading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>If LLMs are not capable of this type of reasoning, then we can forget about AGI.<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

But if LLMs are able to do this type of mathematical reasoning and double-check their own answers to make sure they are correct before writing them down, then we could be a lot closer to AGI than we\u2019ve seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My personal thoughts on \u201cStrawberry\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I believe that ChatGPT and other LLMs already have this ability if they want to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, there is no reason why OpenAI couldn\u2019t program GPT-4o to run experiments in the background and double or even triple-check the answers before responding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>But this would be so expensive in terms of \u201ccompute\u201d or energy costs.<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This is all about getting these LLMs to do this efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the efficiency is high enough, OpenAI will release \u201cStrawberry\u201d to the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is still a lot of secrecy behind Strawberry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Strawberry is supposed to be able to perform \u201cplanning\u201d and \u201cdeep research\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will be able to search the internet, make a plan, and perform a series of tasks in the background, BEFORE coming up with a final answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think this will make an enormous difference in the quality of output we get from LLMs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
