{"id":18592,"date":"2024-01-09T10:11:17","date_gmt":"2024-01-09T10:11:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uxmag.com\/?p=18592"},"modified":"2024-01-09T11:03:22","modified_gmt":"2024-01-09T11:03:22","slug":"what-makes-users-adopt-a-new-feature-or-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uxmag.com\/articles\/what-makes-users-adopt-a-new-feature-or-tool","title":{"rendered":"What Makes Users Adopt a New Feature or Tool?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p id=\"569a\">\u201cWill anyone actually use this?\u201d It\u2019s a common question from collaborators \u2014 and with good reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"6113\">A startup\u2019s product might have the best user experience (UX) in the world, but that\u2019s cold comfort when they\u2019re still searching for product-market fit. Even for established products, research from Pendo suggests that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pendo.io\/resources\/the-2019-feature-adoption-report\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">80% of features added are rarely or never used<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"c1c6\">UX Researchers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/articles\/first-rule-of-usability-dont-listen-to-users\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">don\u2019t often ask users to predict their future behavior<\/a>, since those answers can be unreliable. But for decades, academic researchers have been systematically predicting technology adoption, and you can use the best of what they\u2019ve learned in your practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"beea\">In this article, we\u2019ll take a look at how the study of technology adoption has developed over time. And you\u2019ll learn some tools that you can start implementing in your research practice today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2c00\">Diffusion of Innovations theory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"f3f9\">In the early 1960s, Ohio State University sociologist Everett Rogers published a book titled&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Diffusion-Innovations-5th-Everett-Rogers\/dp\/0743222091\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Diffusion of Innovations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"d026\">In the book, he synthesized the findings of over 500 multidisciplinary studies covering a wide range of contexts, such as agriculture (e.g., hybrid seed and automated harvesters) and healthcare (e.g. hospital hygiene and cancer screenings). He then distilled major findings into three groups of five: the five categories of adopters, the five characteristics of an innovation that adopters consider, and the five stages of adoption.<a href=\"https:\/\/lawtonpybus.medium.com\/?source=post_page-----f01093934dc8--------------------------------\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/uxmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/0_FaBPe3xeh7NiVpg-.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/0_FaBPe3xeh7NiVpg-.webp 800w, https:\/\/uxmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/0_FaBPe3xeh7NiVpg--300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/uxmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/0_FaBPe3xeh7NiVpg--768x576.webp 768w, https:\/\/uxmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/0_FaBPe3xeh7NiVpg--702x526.webp 702w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>(Credit:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Diffusion_of_ideas.svg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hvassing<\/a>)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p id=\"5e02\">Rogers found that over time, the groups adopting the innovation have meaningful differences: notably, they are distinguished by their risk tolerance, financial liquidity and resilience, and their status and persuasiveness in the community. Members of each group share similarities in age, education, and conservatism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"a823\">Of the five groups of adopters Rogers identified, the earliest adopters are the\u00a0<strong>innovators<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>early adopters<\/strong>, followed by the\u00a0<strong>early<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>late majorities<\/strong>.\u00a0The\u00a0<strong>laggards<\/strong>\u00a0are the last to adopt after finally being convinced to incorporate the innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"a48f\">Rogers then found that each group considers five characteristics of the innovation when choosing whether to adopt it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Compatibility<\/strong>: how well does the innovation work with existing tools, practices, and values?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trialability<\/strong>: before you buy it or commit to it, can you try it out?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Relative advantage&nbsp;<\/strong>of the innovation over alternatives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Observability<\/strong>: can you see others using the innovation, and are the benefits noticeable?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Simplicity&nbsp;<\/strong>or&nbsp;<strong>complexity<\/strong>: Innovations that are easier to use spread more quickly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"39d8\">With a better understanding of innovation and its potential users, Rogers\u2019 framework can then be used to consider what he termed the five stages of acceptance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Awareness<\/strong>, or initial exposure to an innovation without the benefit of much information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Persuasion<\/strong>, when a potential adopter becomes interested in and begins seeking information about the innovation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Decision<\/strong>, the adopter makes an initial determination to adopt or reject the innovation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Implementation<\/strong>, if adopted, where the innovation is used and evaluated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Continuation<\/strong>, or an ongoing decision to continue using or ultimately reject the innovation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ae69\">Diffusion of Innovations theory has been highly influential as a sophisticated and pioneering work in this domain. It\u2019s valuable to understand users\u2019 needs and contexts, especially for products seeking to create network effects \u2014 such as a social network or dating app \u2014 where the value increases with the number of users. An important note: as a sociological model it is best used to describe population-level trends rather than predict individual choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"8261\">A few suggested takeaways for UX practitioners:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Select research participants,&nbsp;<\/strong>using behavioral and demographic screeners, who mirror the characteristics and traits of the adopter groups you are aiming to reach with your product or service.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Assess how your product measures<\/strong>&nbsp;up against competing solutions across the five characteristics that adopters consider through competitive analysis and benchmarking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Address the changing needs of potential adopters<\/strong>&nbsp;moving through the stages of adoption in your product and accompanying materials. You can find areas for improvement here using qualitative interviews.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"d254\">Technology Acceptance Model<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1bd0\">In the mid-1980s at MIT, Fred Davis wanted to understand how to get professionals to start using personal computing systems in the workplace as part of his dissertation. Combining key elements of the Diffusion of Innovations theory and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theory_of_reasoned_action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">psychological models of behavior<\/a>, he proposed and evaluated the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?view_op=view_citation&amp;hl=en&amp;user=rKH2D8MAAAAJ&amp;citation_for_view=rKH2D8MAAAAJ%3Au5HHmVD_uO8C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Technology Acceptance Model (TAM)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0across a series of studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"e626\">Davis and the other principal investigators in this line of research come from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/businessdegrees.uab.edu\/blog\/what-is-information-systems\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">information systems<\/a>, an academic sister to UX typically part of a university\u2019s business department. Though its original context was institutional technology adoption \u2014 think the internal apps you use for operational and logistical tasks at work \u2014 it has since been used across many other areas, including consumer technology.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/uxmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/0_BmN3J_PcurQ41d4O-1024x576.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uxmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/0_BmN3J_PcurQ41d4O-1024x576.webp 1024w, https:\/\/uxmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/0_BmN3J_PcurQ41d4O-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/uxmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/0_BmN3J_PcurQ41d4O-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/uxmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/0_BmN3J_PcurQ41d4O.webp 1456w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Technology Acceptance Model<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p id=\"f267\">Davis identified two primary factors with impressive explanatory power:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Perceived usefulness<\/strong>: The belief that using the new technology would enhance performance on a job or task.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Perceived ease of use<\/strong>: The extent to which using the new technology would be free from effort.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"2cdf\">A consistent finding across thousands of replications and applications of the model since then is that although perceived ease of use is a meaningful influence, perceived usefulness plays a more important role. So UX practitioners should give the \u201ceffectiveness\u201d dimension of usability extra scrutiny in any adoption-related projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"145a\">One of TAM\u2019s enduring strengths is its simplicity: you assess the product or feature on two key dimensions. Successful products hope to achieve \u201cSuper Tool\u201d status. Determine where your product currently stands and work with your team to develop a plan to move it closer to that goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1191\">In short, UX teams should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Measure perceived ease of use and usefulness<\/strong>&nbsp;(e.g., with UMUX-LITE) in usability studies to find opportunities for improving adoption rates along each dimension.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Give added attention to perceived usefulness<\/strong>&nbsp;in adoption-related studies, highlighting its pivotal role in reports and study deliverables.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a92e\">Other noteworthy developments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"2b1d\">Although TAM remains simple and effective, you can make more accurate predictions with a more robust and theoretically sophisticated model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"e02a\">That\u2019s why Viswanath Venkatesh and colleagues extended the model with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?view_op=view_citation&amp;hl=en&amp;user=C-7sFjEAAAAJ&amp;citation_for_view=C-7sFjEAAAAJ%3Au-x6o8ySG0sC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>TAM 2<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?view_op=view_citation&amp;hl=en&amp;user=C-7sFjEAAAAJ&amp;citation_for_view=C-7sFjEAAAAJ%3AW7OEmFMy1HYC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>3<\/strong><\/a>, including other relevant elements like prior experience, independent choice, subjective norms, self-efficacy and anxieties related to the technology, and even objective usability. Though perceived usefulness and ease of use remain important, this model introduces curiosity, joy and control as key considerations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"b1e0\">Venkatesh and colleagues developed the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?view_op=view_citation&amp;hl=en&amp;user=C-7sFjEAAAAJ&amp;citation_for_view=C-7sFjEAAAAJ%3Au5HHmVD_uO8C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) 1<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?view_op=view_citation&amp;hl=en&amp;user=C-7sFjEAAAAJ&amp;citation_for_view=C-7sFjEAAAAJ%3AkzcrU_BdoSEC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>2<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0as an attempt to integrate findings from across the domain. It incorporates many similar and overlapping elements from other models described here and goes a step further with factors like gender, age, price, and habit. The latest version of UTAUT is simpler than TAM 3, and remarkably, predicts 70\u201374% of usage intentions and 35\u201352% of usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"621c\">There are a few ways UX teams can apply these newer models:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The latest versions of TAM point to concrete suggestions\u00a0<\/strong>for improving<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>perceived ease of use and usefulness, if the next steps are unclear after initial measurement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>HMSAM is better for entertainment and leisure products<\/strong>&nbsp;where usefulness is less relevant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>UTAUT is the best predictive model<\/strong>&nbsp;if there\u2019s adequate time and resources to measure all its elements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"e693\">TL;DR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"62a5\">Understanding technology adoption is crucial for product development, and UX Researchers can use validated models to help.
